This shows one of the searchlight emplacements that once housed a 90cm coast defence searchlight that illuminated Broad Sound for the twin six-pounder, quick-firing gun. Orkney and Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
