Scope and Content View from south-east of engine room, Balfour Battery, Hoxa Head, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands Balfour Battery, a coast battery, was constructed at the main entrance to Scapa Flow, as a defence against fast moving craft and motor torpedo boats attacking Scapa Flow. This building was the engine room which housed the engine which provided power for the battery and for the searchlights. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
