Scope and Content View from north of director tower, Balfour Battery, Hoxa Head, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands Balfour Battery was built during World War II at the main entrance to Scapa Flow to defend the Flow against attack from fast moving motor torpedo boats and other hostile craft. This shows the director tower for one of the twin six-pounder guns with the crew shelter in the foreground. Looking across Hoxa Sound, the top observation post directed the gun while the lower one directed the searchlights. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
