Scope and Content View from north of No 2 gun emplacement, Balfour Battery, Hoxa Head, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands Balfour Battery was constructed during World War II to help close Hoxa Sound, the main entrance to Scapa Flow, to hostile fast moving torpedo boats and other craft. This is No 2 gun emplacement viewed from No 1 emplacement, with the director tower and gun house below, the crew shelter (left of the tower) and magazine (right). The top observation post directed the gun; the lower one, the searchlights. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
