Scope and Content View from the south-east of No1 gun emplacement, Balfour Battery, Hoxa Head, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands Balfour Battery is one of the coast batteries constructed during World War II to defend Scapa Flow from hostile motor torpedo boats and other fast moving craft. This shows No 1 twin six-pounder gun emplacement. The top observation post directed the gun; the lower one, the searchlights. The gun house is on the left with magazine and crew shelter either side of the observation tower. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
