Scope and Content Aerial view showing possible Early Christian monastic vallum, Fortingall, Perthshire It is likely that there was an early medieval monastery at Fortingall. A bronze-coated iron bell, of a type associated with the early Irish Christians, has been found in the area, as well as many simple cross-marked stones. Recently at Fortingall, as can be seen in this aerial photograph, cropmarks have been discovered of three substantial ditched enclosures, one within the other surrounding the churchyard. They are thought to be the monastic vallum. The vallum was the earthwork or stockade which surrounded Early Christian monasteries, as at Iona, which denoted the physical and spiritual boundary. The parish church of Fortingall stands approximately in the centre of the enclosure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
