Scope and Content Gravestone of John Guthrie, Lundie Parish Church, Angus This tympanum (top part) of this gravestone features a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death), two small masks (perhaps further soul-images) and two flowers, which appear to be thistles (emblems of Scotland). Between the pilasters below is an armorial panel which includes a depiction of a weaving loom and shuttle, emblems of the trade of a weaver. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates John Guthrie, who died in 1744. It is inscribed: 'JOHN GUTHRIE AND ANN NICOL/HERE LIES JOHN GUTHRIE/IN BALSHANDO WHO DEPA/RTED THIS LIFE JUNE 12/1743 AGED 27 YEARS'.
