Scope and Content Sir William Arrol's Works (Dalmarnock Iron Works), Dunn Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1871 by William Gunn, power-loom shuttle manufacturer, at a time when the Bridgeton and Calton districts were a major centre of power-loom weaving, especially of muslins. The power-loom weavers were served by a number of firms who specialised in parts for looms. This shows the works from the west. The tall windows on the ground floor, with their cast iron window frames, are typical of industrial buildings of the 1860s and 1870s. The attic storey was added by Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd after they had absorbed this building into their Dalmarnock Iron Works. The structural engineering firm of Sir William Arrol & Co was founded in Dunn Street in about 1868, and expanded to cover almost the whole of a large block. This shuttle factory was absorbed during that expansion. It was demolished, along with the rest of the works, in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
