Scope and Content Portland Suspension Bridge, Carlton Place, Glasgow This bridge was built in 1851-3 for the heritors (landowners) of Gorbals to replace a wooden temporary bridge, installed while Glasgow Bridge was being rebuilt in 1833-5, which failed in 1846. The pylons were designed by Alexander Kirkland, architect, and the ironworks by George Martin, engineer. This shows the bridge from the north-east, as altered in 1870-1 by Bell & Miller, engineers. They retained Kirkland's pylons, and lowered Martin's chains to support a deck stiffened by lattice girder parapets. On the left is part of a transit shed on Custom House Quay. The 1870-1 modifications were made in the light of the greater understanding of suspension bridge design arising from investigation of a number of failures of such structures. The bridge, partly rebuilt in 1926, is still in use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
