Scope and Content Chest tomb of George Gauld, Parish Church of St Mary and Churchyard, Kirkton of Auchterhouse, Angus This chest tomb is coffin-shaped, and has incised decoration around the sides in imitation of the panelling on a timber coffin. The globe on a stand on top of the tomb is an emblem of the deceased's career as a teacher. The large gravestone to the left of the tomb in this photograph is also dedicated to the teacher. The body would not have been placed in the tomb itself, but laid to rest underneath it as in a normal burial. Chest tombs, tablestones and coffin-shaped tombs are derived from medieval styles. This chest tomb commemorates George Gauld, who died in 1834. It is inscribed: 'Sacred to the memory of/GEORGE GAULD A.M/Preacher of the Gospel; for nearly 18 years one of the teachers in/the Dundee Academy, who died at Bardomy. Perthshire. On the 16th of/July, 1834 in the 42nd year of his age'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
