Scope and Content King's Bridge, Ballater Street, Glasgow This bridge was built in 1932-3 to replace a bridge constructed in 1901 using material from the temporary bridge used to by-pass the Glasgow Bridge during its rebuilding in 1895-9. The new bridge was designed under the supervision of T P M Somers, the city engineer. This shows three of the four spans of the bridge from the south. Though it looks like a totally reinforced concrete structure, the deck (which is made of that material) is actually supported on riveted steel plate girders. The concrete abutments and piers are faced in granite, which is also used for the parapet. The contractors for this bridge were Sir William Arrol & Co Ltd, whose Dalmarnock Iron Works was not far away. The bridge was constructed during the depression years of the early 1930s, perhaps as an unemployment relief measure. It is still in use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
