Scope and Content Barrowfield Works, No 49 Solway Street, Glasgow This factory was built from 1902 for Carsons Ltd, chocolate manufacturers. The main three-storeyed block was built in two stages: the first two floors being constructed in 1902; the top one being added in 1910 to designs by Duncan & Copland, architects. This shows the factory from the south-west. The 1904-10 range is to the right from the five-storeyed end block. The shorter chimney on the right served the works, the taller on beside it being that of the Glasgow Cotton Spinners' Co Ltd's mills in Carstairs Street and Swanston Street. This works was disused in 1965, but had latterly been occupied by Cowans Ltd. makers of chocolates and confections, who used the trade mark 'My Sweet' for their products. Boxes of chocolates were, until the 1960s, part of the experience of cinema-going, and demand declined as television took over. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
