Scope and Content Rutherglen Bridge, Glasgow This bridge was opened in 1896, and was built to replace a five-span structure of 1776 which had become too narrow. The new bridge was designed to accommodate a double line of tram tracks. This shows the bridge from the south-east, with the towpath along the north bank of the River Clyde on the right. The slenderness of the piers and the flatness of the arches is characteristic of the last generation of masonry arch bridges. It is faced in granite. This was one of the last two masonry arch bridges to be built over the River Clyde, the other being Glasgow Bridge at Jamaica Street, which was rebuilt between 1984 and 1899. Like Glasgow Bridge this one still carries main road traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
