Scope and Content Netherton Bascule Bridge, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow This two-leaf bascule bridge was built by the Forth & Clyde Canal to carry a minor road over the section of canal between Maryhill and Bowling, opened in 1790. It was still in operating condition in 1965, though the canal had been closed for nearly three years. This shows the bridge from the south-west. The fixed quadrant on the left was not of the standard type, probably because the original one has been damaged. The building on the left is now a cat and dog home. The surviving two-leaf bascule bridges on the Maryhill to Bowling section of the canal have all been repaired, though the wooden handrails seen here have been replaced in steel as an anti-vandal measure. The Forth & Clyde Canal was opened throughout in 2001, as part of the Millennium Link project. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
