Scope and Content Saracen Foundry, No 73 Hawthorn Street, Glasgow This foundry was constructed on a greenfield site from about 1869 for Walter Macfarlane & Co, architectural iron founders. This firm had been established in 1850 in Saracen Lane, near Glasgow Cross, and had moved to Washington Street in 1862. The Hawthorn Street site was rail-connected. This shows the right-hand doorway in the centre of the frontage of the foundry to Hawthorn Street, part of the original works, designed by James Boucher, architect, whose styling could be, as here, idiosyncratic. Macfarlanes were the largest firm of architectural iron founders in Scotland, employing about 1,200 workers in 1890. Catalogues of their products survive to give an idea of their extraordinary range and quality. The works had closed by 1965 and was demolished in 1967. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
