Scope and Content Lambhill Bridge, Balmore Road, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow This bridge was opened in 1930 to carry Balmore Road over original main line of the Forth & Clyde Canal from Grangemouth to Stockingfield, on the outskirts of Glasgow. This electrically-operated bascule bridge was designed by T Somers, engineer, and replaced a wooden two-leaf bascule bridge. This shows the bridge from the west. The steel span is pivoted on the right side, and the control cabin can be seen at that end. The windows had been partly bricked up after the closure of the canal at the end of 1962. The abutments are of reinforced concrete, favoured by Somers. This bridge was one of four similar structures built in about 1930 to carry major roads over the Forth & Clyde Canal, the others being at Blairdardie, Temple, and Torrance. This one, and the Temple and Torrance ones, survive as fixed bridges. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
