Scope and Content Canal aqueduct, Stockingfield Junction, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow This aqueduct was designed by Robert Whitworth as part of the section of the Forth & Clyde Canal from Stockingfield Junction to Bowling, constructed between 1786 and 1790. It is situated immediately to the west of the point where the new section began. This shows the aqueduct from the south-west. The depth of the canal bed resulted in the roadway resembling a tunnel. The spandrels are curved in plan, and the wing walls in both plan and elevation, a refined form of construction intended to counter the outward thrust of the weight of water in the canal. Whitworth built three of these aqueducts, but this is the only one surviving in use. One over Maryhill Road has been replaced, and the third, over Possil Road, on the Glasgow Branch extension to Port Dundas, was by-passed in about 1880, and is now barely visible.
