Scope and Content Elie Station, Fife This station was opened in 1863 by the Leven & East of Fife Railway, which was promoted to serve the fishing and trading burghs of the East Neuk of Fife. It was a 'cheap railway' built as economically as possible in the aftermath of the 'Railway Mania' of the late 1840s. This shows the station building on the west-bound platform from an east-bound train. This building was built by the North British Railway in the late 19th century to a near-standard design. The original Leven & East of Fife Railway station building was on the east-bound platform. The East of Fife Railway reached Kilconquhar in 1857, and the line was extended to Anstruther in 1863 by the Leven & East of Fife Railway. A link to St Andrews was finally completed in 1887. The whole of the East Neuk line (except the St Andrews branch from Leuchars) was closed in 1965. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
