Scope and Content Acme Machine Works, Nos 2-8 Orr Place, Glasgow This factory was built in 1885 for the Acme Machine Co, founded in 1881 by Peter Burt in Bain Square. In 1888 it was making a range of domestic machinery, baby carriages, and a combined gas engine and mincing machine. It speciality was the 'Acme' wringer for removing water from clothes after washing. This shows the Orr Street frontage of the works from the west. The mansard roof was added in 1909 to designs by Burnet & Boston, architects. In 1965 the works was occupied by James Marshall (Glasgow) Ltd, makers of macaroni, and 'Farola' for making milk puddings. The 'Acme' wringer, which had hand-turned rubber rollers, was a standard piece of household equipment before electric washing machines became readily available. Peter Burt also had a hand in inventing the sleeve valve for internal combustion engines, widely used in aero-engines. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
