Scope and Content Brewhouse, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, from south-west The lower wall of the tower can be seen at the right of this photograph, taken in 1942. The arched entrance which can be seen to the left of the picture was built in 1875, as part of substantial additions carried out during this period. The building in the centre dates from the 16th century, and was once the brewhouse where the castle's beer was made. The castle is now open to the public during the summer months, and the brewhouse has been converted into a staff flat. As a member of staff stays at the castle all year, it means that Drum has been constantly occupied since at least 1323. Drum Castle is situated about 16km south-west of Aberdeen. It was occupied by the Irvine family from 1323 until 1976, when The National Trust for Scotland took over its management. The oldest part of the castle, a defensive tower-house, may date from the late 13th or early 14th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
