Scope and Content Central Station, Gordon Street, Glasgow This station was opened in 1879 by the Caledonian Railway, as their city centre terminus. It was much enlarged between 1899 and 1905 to accommodate all the company's services to the south and west. The extension was designed by Donald A Mathieson, engineer and James Miller, architect. This shows a south-bound train at Platform Two, part of the 1879 station, but extended as part of the 1899-1905 works. The roof of the 1879 station is behind the locomotive, and to the left is part of the 1899-1905 addition. The 1879 station, with malleable-iron trusses spanning the full width of the station, was technically advanced, but the additions and modifications created one of the finest stations in Britain. Its fabric had a thorough overhaul in the late 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
