Scope and Content Custom House and Steamboat Quay, Custom House Place, Greenock, Inverclyde The quay now known as the Steamboat Quay was built in 1788, and rebuilt and extended in 1809-18, when it became the base for steamboat services to and from Glasgow and the lower Firth of Clyde, beginning in 1812 with Henry Bell's 'Comet'. This shows the quay from the north, showing the timber-piled front suitable for regular use by steamboats. On the left is the harbour-master's office and waiting room, and on the right part of another waiting room built in 1859. The custom house was built in 1818 to designs by William Burn. In the 1990s the quays were rebuilt by Renfrewshire Enterprise, and the harbour-master's office and waiting room were dismantled. The 1859 block had been demolished at an earlier date. The custom house was modernised in the 1980s, with a modification to the roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
