Scope and Content Inchgreen Gas Works, Greenock, Inverclyde This gas works was founded in 1872 by Greenock Corporation, replacing a works built in 1828 on the Glebe. Over the years it was greatly enlarged and modernised. This shows the works from the north-east, with the vertical retort house on the left and the gas holders to the right. The building in front of the holders may have been a purifier house. In common with most of the coal-gas plants in Scotland this works had closed in the mid-1960s, and it was subsequently demolished and the site used as a fitting-out wharf by Lithgows Ltd and Lower Clyde Shipbuilders Ltd.
