Scope and Content William Beardmore & Co Ltd Shipyard, Dalmuir, West Dunbartonshire This shipyard was built in 1902-8 by William Beardmore & Co Ltd to build the largest classes of warships. When completed it was the best-equipped and most up-to-date yard on the River Clyde. Beardmore's other plants supplied it with steel plates and forgings, and with guns and armour plate. This shows the fitting-out basin of the yard, with some of the smaller sheds. In 1965 these were occupied by Arnott, Young & Co Ltd and used for shipbreaking. The frigates in the basin were in for breaking up. Shipbuilding ended in this yard in 1930, when it was purchased by National Shipbuilders' Security Ltd, a company formed to reduce wasteful competition in the industry by buying up and closing down yards. It was then divided up. In the early 1990s the Health Care International Hospital was built on the site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
