Scope and Content Scotstoun Shipbuilding Yard, No 903 South Street, Glasgow This shipyard was founded on this site in 1855 by Barclay, Curle & Co, whose yard at Stobcross was required for the extension of the quays of Glasgow Harbour. The Clydeholm yard was subsequently enlarged and modernised on a number of occasions. This shows the yard with the last vessel to be built there, the MV 'Hamlet', on its building berth. To the right is the North British Diesel Engine Works, built in 1912 to a German design, which built marine diesel engines for installation in Barclay, Curle & Co's, and other builders', hulls. Barclay, Curle & Co's yard was completely rebuilt in the late 1950s and early 1960s to build ships using the latest technology. Unfortunately the demand for the types of ships it was designed to build collapsed, and the yard closed in 1965. The engine works remained in operation until 1978, and still stands.
