Scope and Content Muirtown Basin, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Highland This basin was built in the 19th century, as part of the Caledonian Canal, as a port for the town (now city) of Inverness. It is a large expanse of water, with extensive quays on the east and north-east sides, which were rail-served until about 1965. This shows the north-east quay from the north-west, with the track of the railway branch line which served the basin. In the background is Glen Albyn Distillery which was founded in 1846 and rebuilt in 1884. The vessels in the basin are pleasure craft. Muirtown Basin is now used extensively by pleasure craft. Glen Albyn Distillery closed in 1983 and has subsequently been demolished. The headquarters of the Caledonian Canal is now on the north-east quay of the basin. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
