Scope and Content Clachnaharry Canal Lock and Workshops, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Highland This lock was built as part of the Caledonian Canal, designed by Thomas Telford, which runs from Clachnaharry to Corpach, through the Great Glen. It was opened in 1822. The workshops were established here at about that time. This shows the workshops from the north, looking across the lock chamber. The main workshop range has the bellcote on the end. The elevated section with the large windows is the control room for the lock, raised so that the lock-keeper can see over the railway swing bridge to the north-west of the lock. In 1965, when this photograph was taken, the lock had recently been converted from manual to hydraulic operation. The workshops were virtually disused by the 1990s, as the canal now has no directly-employed workshop staff. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
