Scope and Content Signal box, Clachnaharry Station, Inverness, Highland The first bridge on this site was designed by Joseph Mitchell for the Inverness & Ross-shire Railway and opened in 1862. The Highland Railway replaced it in 1909 by the present structure, a steel version of the 1862 bridge. This signal box was probably built in 1909 to control the approaches to the bridge. This shows the signal box from the north-west. The level crossing on the left gives access along the Caledonian Canal, which the bridge crosses. The box was used by a signalman who also operated the bridge by hand. The approaches to the bridge from both sides of the railway, and from the north side of the canal, were controlled by semaphore signals. The railway is now signalled by radio, and the canal signal has been removed. The box is still there, and the bridge is now electrically operated. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
