Scope and Content Canal Workshops and Muirtown Basin, Caledonian Canal, Clachnaharry, Inverness, Highland This lock was built as part of the Caledonian Canal, designed by Thomas Telford, which runs from Clachnaharry to Corpach, through the Great Glen. It was opened in 1822. The workshops were established here at about that time. This shows the bottom gates of the lock from the north-west. These were replacements in steel of late 19th-century, malleable-iron-framed, wood-clad gates. On the far side of the canal are the timber store and saw mill. In 1965, when this photograph was taken, the lock had recently been converted from manual to hydraulic operation. The workshops were virtually disused by the 1990s, as the canal now has no directly-employed workshop staff. The timber store and saw mill have been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
