Scope and Content Buchanan Street Station, Buchanan Street, Glasgow This station was opened in 1849 by the Caledonian Railway, and was its main terminus in the city until Central Station opened in 1879. Buchanan Street then became the terminus for services to Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness. It was rebuilt by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway in the 1920s. This shows part of the station from the buffer stops, with the steel-framed awnings of the 1920s station. The locomotive and coach are typical of those using the station in the mid-1960s. In the distance is the bridge carrying Dobbies Loan over the entrance to the station. The original station was to have been an elaborate stone-built one, but the money ran out, and a temporary wooden one was built. It was this station that was replaced in the 1920s, also by a wooden one, but with a steel frame. The 1920s station closed in 1967 and was quickly demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
