Scope and Content Brass Foundry, Nos 57-9 McAlpine Street, Glasgow The history of this building is not unambiguous, but it is probable that it was built from c.1866 for Wallace & Connell, who were at that time brass founders, coppersmiths and hydraulic engineers. By 1872 they were described as plumbers, lead merchants and brass founders. This shows the building from the north-east, with a store built in 1905 on the left, and part of the Waterloo Saw Mill of 1895-6 on the right. The brass works is unusual in having a Greek key pattern frieze between the first and second floors. Demolition of the buildings in this street began in 1966 as part of the comprehensive redevelopment of Anderston, and this building went in about 1970. It had an internal well running the full height of the building to allow material to be transferred from floor to floor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
