Scope and Content Anderston Rice Mills, No 27 Washington Street, Glasgow This mill was founded in 1863 by Harvie & McGavin, grain merchants, using a former cotton store, built before 1845, as the mill, and adding a red and white brick granary and a block of offices. The mill was later increased in height by a storey, in brick. This shows the mill from the south-west. As can be seen, it was, in 1965, hemmed in by tenements. The L-plan offices are in the foreground, with the 1863 granary behind. The mill is immediately to the left of the granary, and can just be seen. In 1965 the mill was primarily engaged in milling rice as food for the Lascar (Pakistani) crews of ships using Glasgow Harbour. The surrounding tenements were demolished in the late 1960s. The mill itself was closed in the 1970s, and lay empty until the late 1990s, when it was converted into an hotel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
