Scope and Content Thornliebank Print Works, Main Street, Thornliebank, Glasgow This works was founded in 1778, for the printing of linen woven in the vicinity, by John Crum. By the 1890s both block and cylinder printing were being undertaken, and cotton had supplanted linen. In the late 19th century this was one of the largest calico-printing works in Scotland. This shows the site of the works from the entrance, looking north-east. It was an integrated works spinning, weaving and printing. The tall building in the distance may have been a cotton-spinning mill. The Crums of Thornliebank were benevolent employers, and created a fine factory village for their workers. The works closed in 1930, and was allowed to fall into decay. The site was cleared later in the 1960s, and has been redeveloped. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
