Scope and Content Hapland Mill, No 31 Stewarton Road, Dunlop, East Ayrshire This mill was built in the early 19th century as a blanket mill, but from 1945 it specialised in spinning woollen yarn for Kilmarnock carpet factories. The complex incorporated both original buildings and late 19th-century yellow brick additions. This shows the entrance to the works, with the gatehouse on the left. The shelter was provided for workers queuing to clock in, or to receive their pay packets, as workers were paid in cash in the 1960s. Note the cleanliness of the place, also characteristic of the period. Carpet yarn was spun from the wool of Scottish black-face sheep, which was relatively coarse and springy, giving a hard-wearing pile. In the post-war years demand for durable Scottish-made carpets was buoyant, but it was eroded by cheaper tufted carpets, and the industry in Scotland is almost non-existent.
