Scope and Content Bascule bridge, Firhill Road, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow This was a standard Forth & Clyde Canal two-leaf bascule bridge on the Glasgow Branch of the canal, carrying Firhill Road. Built around the opening of the canal in 1790, it was still in operating condition in 1965. This shows the bridge from the east. The tenements are in Murano Street, so called because there was a glass works in it. The canal had been closed since the end of 1962, but was still remarkably free from weed growth. This bridge was replaced in about 1969 by a culvert. This was in turn replaced in 1983 by a fixed concrete bridge, with headroom for navigation, as part of the Glasgow Canal Project which restored navigation between Port Dundas and Bishopbriggs. The Forth & Clyde Canal was completely reopened in 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
