Scope and Content East footbridge, Firhill Basin, Forth & Clyde Canal, Glasgow These basins were formed in 1788 and extended in 1849. They were constructed for the storage of floating timber, imported from Scandinavia and kept in water until needed for sawing into planks. Some of this timber was made up into rafts and floated through the canal. This shows the light footbridge at the city end of the narrow curved island separating the two basins. Note the groove in the left-hand abutment. There is a matching one in the right-hand one, and corresponding provision at the other end. Planks can be inserted in these grooves to block off the inner basin. These basins had been disused for many years in 1965. The footbridges have been removed, and the island is now treated as a nature reserve. It is used a nesting site by waterfowl. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
