Scope and Content Eastfield Engine Shed, Glasgow This large locomotive shed was built in 1902-4 by the North British Railway as the mainline locomotive depot for its Glasgow services. It replaced a shed built in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as part of its Cowlairs Works. Eastfield was badly damaged by fire in 1919, and rebuilt. This shows the steam crane used to empty the ash deposited in pits when locomotives were being serviced, and for loading it into wagons for disposal. In the background is the depot office, with its clock tower, built in 1902. This depot was designed for servicing steam locomotives. When steam operation ceased the depot was completely rebuilt to deal with diesel locomotives, in about 1970. The shed closed in the 1980s and the site has since been almost completely cleared.
