Scope and Content Eastfield Engine Shed, Glasgow This large locomotive shed was built in 1902-4 by the North British Railway as the mainline locomotive depot for its Glasgow services. It replaced a shed built in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as part of its Cowlairs Works. Eastfield was badly damaged by fire in 1919, and rebuilt. This shows the base of the mechanical coaling tower, probably installed in the 1940s to replace a hand-operated coaling stage. Above this base there were concrete hoppers filled mechanically from coal wagons. These hoppers discharged coal directly into the tenders and bunkers of locomotives. This depot was designed for servicing steam locomotives. This coaling tower was demolished soon after this photograph was taken, and when steam operation ceased the depot was completely rebuilt to deal with diesel locomotives, in about 1970. The shed closed in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
