Scope and Content Eastfield Engine Shed, Glasgow This large locomotive shed was built in 1902-4 by the North British Railway as the mainline locomotive depot for its Glasgow services. It replaced a shed built in 1842 by the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway as part of its Cowlairs Works. Eastfield was badly damaged by fire in 1919, and rebuilt. This shows the shed proper from the south-east, as rebuilt after the fire. The roof has been removed from the front bays. Note the water crane between the locomotives, used to fill the tanks of the steam locomotives. On the right is a large snowplough. This depot was designed for servicing steam locomotives, and when steam operation ceased it was completely rebuilt to deal with diesel locomotives, in about 1970. The shed closed in the 1980s, and the site has been almost completely cleared, apart from some track and an office. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
