Scope and Content Detail of specimen stairwell, Whitfield Development, Dundee The Whitfield development includes a huge inter-linked honeycomb of over 130 hexagonal blocks, built 1968-72. The development was constructed using the 'Skarne' system of pre-fabricated panels, and sections constructed on site. This photograph shows one stair tower and its walkways. Every block is linked to the next by these concrete towers, which form the corners of each hexagonal section of housing blocks. The concrete has been cast with a ridged design. The Skarne blocks were produced in such great numbers, that a factory was constructed adjacent to the site. Recently, areas have been demolished or redeveloped, by council architects. The honeycomb pattern of blocks survives to some extent. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
