Scope and Content General view during demolition work at the Whitfield Development, Dundee The Whitfield development included a vast network of 130 low-rise blocks, linked into hexagons. They were built 1968-72 using the 'Skarne' system. In total these blocks created 2,459 dwellings. Many were demolished or renovated from 1989 onwards. This photograph shows a digger demolishing one of the Skarne blocks. The cladding has broken off revealing blockwork and pre-cast panels beneath. A newly refurbished block can be seen on the left of the photograph. The linked blocks in this photograph were built using the Skarne composite system, which used both pre-fabricated panels, and sections made on site. The Skarne factory was built adjacent to the site due to the sheer scale of this development. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
