Scope and Content Aerial view of Inchmahome Priory, Lake of Menteith, Stirling This aerial view from the north-north-west, taken in 1984, shows the choir of the priory church to the left, with the remains of the nave abutting the cloister. On the east side of the cloister are the remains of the domestic accommodation. To the bottom right of the nave is the stump of the church tower. The priory is on an island in the Lake of Menteith, and is reached by ferry, operating in the summer months. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, the priory is open to the public during the summer. Inchmahome Priory was founded as an Augustinian house in 1238 by Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith. Considerable parts of both the priory church and the monastic buildings survive, much of the fabric dating from the 13th century. There are three fine recumbent tombs, and also remains of the monastic gardens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
