Scope and Content Port Dundas Distillery, Nos 76-80 North Canal Bank Street, Glasgow This was created from two distilleries of the same name. The first one was founded in 1811 by Daniel McFarlane & Co, and the second c.1820 by Brown, Gourlay & Co. Both introduced continuous stills in 1845. They amalgamated in the 1860s, and became part of the Distillers' Co Ltd (DCL) on its foundation in 1877. This shows part of the distillery from the south-west. It looks as though the masonry building on the corner is the filling store, where newly made spirit is put into the casks in which it will be matured. The tall building behind it is a still house for a Coffey still, perhaps for one of the 1845 stills. When the distillery joined the DCL it had three Coffey stills and five pot stills, and retained the pot stills until the early 1900s. The distillery was badly damaged by fire in 1903, but quickly rebuilt. It has been largely rebuilt since 1965, and is still in use as a grain whisky distillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
