Scope and Content Deanston Mills (now Deanston Distillery), Stirling This village was founded in 1785 by the Buchanan family to spin cotton by water-power, using Richard Arkwright's package of processes. The mills were eventually taken over in 1808 by James Finlay & Co, who continued cotton manufacture there until 1965. This shows the waterwheel house behind the main mill building, part of which can be seen on the left. The lade enters from the right, and feeds a malleable-iron launder with sites for eight high-breast wheels, though only four were installed. These were replaced by turbines in 1947. After the end of cotton manufacture in 1965 this semi-basement and first floor of the mill were converted into a malt whisky distillery, as Deanston Distillery, This has passed through various hands, and is still operating.
