Scope and Content Customs House, Nos 298-306 Clyde Street, Glasgow This building was constructed in 1840 to designs by George Ledwell Taylor of London, architect, to collect the customs dues from trade through the port of Glasgow. At that time the major centre of the shipping trade was only a few yards to the west. This shows the building from the south-east. The lower wings on each side are additions to the original building. The buildings on the extreme left, Paisleys outfitters, are opposite the original Broomielaw Quay, in 1840 the steamboat quay. This customs house is notably smaller than the earlier customs houses in Greenock and Leith, which were the most important centres for foreign trade in Scotland at that time. It is still a customs house, but now deals mainly with VAT, rather than import duties. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
