Scope and Content Clyde Place Quay, General Terminus Quay, Anderston Quay and Broomielaw Dock, Glasgow, from George V Bridge The wharves on this stretch of the River Clyde were developed from c.1820 as the port of Glasgow. The earliest quay was on the north side of the river, at the Broomielaw, and was formed in the late 17th century. The artificial deepening of the river increased shipping to the point where new quays were needed. This shows the river looking west from King George V Bridge, with the 1830s Clyde Place wharves on the left, and the cranes of the General Terminus iron ore terminal in the distance. On the right is a hopper barge at the Broomielaw Dock, and Irish steamers at Anderston Quay beyond. This stretch of the river is no longer used for navigation by deep sea vessels, and has silted up. A landscaped walkway has been formed along the north bank. The General Terminus ore terminal was closed in 1978, and has been demolished. The site has since been redeveloped.
