Scope and Content Central Station, Gordon Street, Glasgow The first part of this station was opened in 1879 by the Caledonian Railway. It was extended and remodelled between 1899 and 1905. It is flanked on the north and west sides by the former station hotel, and on the east by railway offices, and other buildings, which obscure views of the roof. This shows part of the interior of the 1879 section, with its deep malleable-iron roof trusses. These support ridge and furrow glazing. On the left is a diesel multiple-unit train on a Lanarkshire local service. The steam locomotive is also on a local train, perhaps to Lanark. This station has been thoroughly refurbished by Railtrack as part of a Government-funded station improvement scheme. The original timber-framed glazing has been replaced with an aluminium-framed equivalent, and access for cleaning and maintenance improved. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
