Scope and Content Warehouse, Nos 44-72 James Watt Street, Glasgow This was the finest of the best group of warehouses in Glasgow, lining both sides of James Watt Street. All were built primarily for the storage of goods imported into the port of Glasgow, whose focal point was in the 1840s and 1850s a short distance away, at the Broomielaw. This shows the warehouse from the north-west, with part of Nos 68-72 James Watt Street on the left. Nos 44-54 was built in about 1861 for Thomas Mann as grain and general free stores. The quality of the design suggests that it came from a fine architect, perhaps Charles Wilson. This warehouse was by 1965 used as a bonded warehouse, but the keeping of large quantities of spirits in city centres fell out of favour after a disastrous fire in Cheapside Street in 1964, and this building lay empty for several years. The body of the warehouse was then demolished, and its façade retained. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
