Scope and Content Warehouse, Nos 44-72 James Watt Street, Glasgow This was one of the finest group of warehouses in Glasgow, lining both sides of James Watt Street. All were built primarily for the storage of goods imported into the port of Glasgow, whose focal point was in the 1840s and 1850s a short distance away, at the Broomielaw. This shows the warehouse from the north-west, with Nos 44-54 James Watt Street beyond. Nos 68-72 was built in 1847-8 for William Connal & Co, storekeepers. Its classical appearance was spoiled a little when an attic storey was added in 1881. The interior is of fireproof construction. This warehouse was by 1965 used as a bonded warehouse, but the keeping of large quantities of spirits in city centres fell out of favour after a disastrous fire in Cheapside Street in 1964, and this building lay empty for several years. The body of the warehouse was then demolished, and its façade retained. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
