Scope and Content Engine works, No 181 Lancefield Street, Glasgow This works was built in about 1914 by Harland & Wolff Ltd, Belfast, who had acquired the London & Glasgow Engineering & Iron Shipbuilding Co Ltd in 1912, and who were adapting their boiler works on the other side of Lancefield Street to build marine diesel engines. This shows the Lancefield Street frontage of the works. The steel frame of the building can be seen embedded in the end wall on the left, but is otherwise concealed by the monumental terracotta brick facing of the principal elevation. Harland & Wolff developed this works to build marine diesel engines under licence from Burmeister & Wain of Copenhagen. The massive scale and monumental treatment of this building reflects the prestige of the venture. The works closed in 1964, and was demolished in 1968-9. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
